Ginastera makes use of gratuitous dissonance in this piece, opening it with a tone ostinato and frequently using minor seconds to harmonize otherwise simple melodies.

This sound, which Ginastera uses frequently, reflects the vastness of the Argentine pampas grasslands. As might be expected from the savageness of the rest of the piece, the coda is anything but subtle: They were written during the year-old composer’s early, nationalistic period. Danzas Argentinas Argentine DancesOp. The Three Argentine Dances constitute perhaps the most popular work in the piano literature of Argentina. The harmonisation of this section is based on the intervals of the fourth and fifth, which give the music a feeling of expansiveness. The first dance, “Danza del viejo boyero” Dance of the Old Oxen-Keeperis based on the rhythm of the malambo, a gaucho dance for a solo male that allows him to show off his tap-dancing talents.

The second, “Danza de la moza donosa” Dance of the Graceful Maidenbegins as a languid piece, turns rousing and intense, and then returns to its languor. As a result of the criollo influence while looking for an Argentinian language, this was one of Ginastera’s favourite chords.
